Community Arts, Theatre & Music
Our state-of-the-art Academy Theatre and facilities inspire not only our own students, but the wider community.
The Academy Theatre is the centrepiece of our multi-million pound extension, opened in 2018.
Overseen by our Theatre Manager and Community Arts Officer, the Academy Theatre is at the heart of school assemblies, productions and awards evenings.
More than that, the Academy Theatre welcomes community groups who want to bring high quality shows to North Manchester.
Some our favourite theatre memories have included a stunning free public performance by the London Russian Ballet School and a wonderful storytelling event for primary school pupils organised by Manchester Libraries, which saw writer Gav Cross entertain hundreds of children.
We also invite you to watch the concerts and productions put on by our own students and open to the whole community. You’ve just missed our stellar production of We Will Rock You, but keep an eye on the Academy Theatre website to see what’s coming up next.
Music lessons for the whole community
For many years we have been proud to host the Blackley Music Centre run by One Education. A great many children aged between 3 and 19 have been through our door for instrument lessons and to perform as part of various ensembles.
One Education also run lessons for our own students and our Big Band is a pride of our academy – it has performed at Heaton Hall and on board moving trams at Heaton Park, as well as numerous concerts for primary schools, senior citizens and the wider community.
Arts in the community
Our academy is proud to have been one of the sponsors of ‘Bee Blackley’: a major new sculpture for the area.
About Bee Blackley
Welcome to Blackley – greenest and highest of Manchester’s neighbourhoods. Up here we can touch the moon and the stars which control the tides and set the patterns of our days. Students travel to and from school and adults commute to work. The bees come and go from their hive. The seasons turn and the flowers blossom again and again. Welcome to Blackley – only a few miles from the city centre, and yet so full of inspiring greenery. Up here we can admire our city’s skyline and see the bigger picture. We co-operate and thrive, like our bees.
It’s what we do
Co-op Academy Manchester is one of a number of academies sponsored by Co-op – a business with a long heritage of supporting local communities. Like Co-op, we are committed to improving the communities we serve. We seek to build on the strengths and help overcome the challenges of the neighbourhood as seen in the Community Wellbeing Index.
We are always looking to build new relationships with organisations passionate about community arts. Please contact the Community Team to find out more. Email us on firstname.lastname@example.org or call the academy on 0161 795 3005.
