2022 Our Year finalists

Connell Co-op College launched a competition as part of the 2022 Our Year project.  Young people aged 5-18 from across Manchester were asked to submit artwork, poetry or a short story, inspired by one of eight key themes:

  • Equal and included
  • Safe and secure
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Connections (digital, transport…)
  • Climate and environment
  • Family and friends
  • Education
  • Play

Nine students were shortlisted for a prize, and invited to a prize giving ceremony at the college. After some light refreshments, the ceremony opened with a welcome from Head of College, Emma Soper. Then Andrea Daubney, Manchester City Council’s Assistant Director of Education, introduced Our Year and what it is aiming to achieve in Manchester. Two Connell students, Katie and Hanan, spoke about their experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic and their vision for the 2022 Our Year project and beyond.

Noah in Year 10, Gabriella in Year 9 and Freddie in Year 7 each won first place in their category.

Well done also to Tamar (Year 10), Aimee, Ema and Emma (Year 8) and Harleen and Lydia (Year 7).

“I was really pleased to win an award for my poem. I wrote it about feelings but I’m not sure where the inspiration to write it came from, as English isn’t one of my favourite subjects! I think I will write more poems in the future.” Freddie
