Film screening and lecture – students invited to think about how well Hollywood celebrates diversity
Dr Wilson ran a fascinating lecture on Wednesday 17 October on the film Black Panther. Popcorn was provided along with a lecture on this question:
Hollywood has been praised for FINALLY making a film with a majority black cast and crew. Is this a greater acceptance and celebration of diversity? Or has Hollywood yet again reduced black characters to simple stereotypes?
Students were invited to decide for themselves what they think.
After the event, Dr Wilson said, “A huge thank you to all the students who came to watch Black Panther last night and all the staff who supported it. The behaviour was brilliant and there was a wonderful atmosphere. It was my fourth time watching the film and my favourite viewing yet! Keep a look-out for announcements for any screenings in the future.”
Hopefully this will be the start of a regular film club in our state-of-the-art new theatre.
