We are proud to be awarded our first Eco-Schools Green Flag
The Eco-Schools Green Flag is an internationally recognised award for continued excellence in improving environmental performance and learning.
Over the last few years, dedicated students and staff have worked tirelessly towards making the academy more sustainable. Since achieving our Eco-Schools Bronze Award in July 2017, our academy “Green Team” has gone from strength to strength; creating an eco-code, holding regular eco-committee meetings, encouraging multiple recycling and energy-saving initiatives.
RHS Campaign for School Gardening
We are lucky to have been heavily involved with the RHS Campaign for School Gardening. In 2018 our student Eco-Warriors designed a garden as part of the Green Plan-It project. The students worked with a horticultural mentor to discover the wonderful world of plants, and rethink the role of our academy’s green spaces, winning an award for the Most Innovative design.
We are pleased to have been recognised for our contribution to school gardening, as a nominee for the RHS School Gardeners of the Year 2020.
Looking back it’s hard to decide where we’ve made the biggest change, so here are just a few of our Green Flag highlights:
- Over the last couple of years, students in years 7 to 10 have taken part in weekly litter picks around the local area. Some of our students were even interviewed live on BBC Radio Manchester as part of their Don’t Mess With Manchester campaign.
- Students and members of the 105th Manchester Scouts gave up their half term to clear an area of land; sowing wildflower seeds, making stick piles and hanging bird boxes. We now have a wildlife garden and were excited to see nesting great tits!
- We were donated 420 saplings by The Woodland Trust, which students and staff have planted around the academy grounds.
We can’t wait to see what more our students can achieve!
