Our show ‘The Wiz’ plays to sell-out crowds
Talented students from The Co-operative Academy of Manchester sold out the NWTAC Theatre in Moston for three nights from February 14th with their 2018 production – The Wiz.
The Wiz is a retelling of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, in the context of African American culture and music which has a soul and Motown feel. The 1978 film starred Diana Ross and Michael Jackson.
The central character of Dorothy was played superbly by Year 8 student Sean. Sean had only non-speaking parts in her primary school shows and this is her first time in a leading role. Sean was joined on stage by a talented cast who bring the other characters of Oz to life with admirable effervescence and energy.
Our students have been rehearsing for many months and have given up evenings and weekends to put the show together. The result is a superb example of ensemble playing at its best. The academy is looking forward to June, when its new state of the art theatre opens as part of its multi-million pound extension. The academy is extremely grateful to NWTAC Theatre for supporting our production this year.
Mrs Lees, Head of Expressive Arts says, “Although the current building work made things challenging, we could not imagine a year without a showcase of our students’ talent. We are delighted that we have a cast which includes many of our younger students; as our academy’s new 300-seat theatre opens in a few months, we truly have an exciting future ahead of us.”
