Student leadership schemes and Student Council
All academy students have the opportunity to take on leadership roles within the academy, and to help make the academy a better place by sharing their views at Student Council.
We are always looking for chances to create new opportunities for student leadership. Below is a list of some of our most common types of student leadership:
- Lead Learners – in all subjects, students from any year group can be given a special role to coach other students, to be an expert in a particular topic, to model how to do a task and more.
- CLIFE Leaders – when our teachers plan their lessons, they think about CLIFE (Challenge, Literacy, Independence, Feedback and Engagement). We train students to observe lessons and share ideas for improving the learning environment.
- Literacy Champions – students take training to promote great reading and writing
- Student Librarians – our Library is run by students who organise the shelves, check out books and help other students to use the facilities
- Tutor Captains and Family Captains – these students are elected by their Tutor Groups and Families to help with jobs like reading out notices and checking their peers are ready for the day
- Interview panels – when we interview people who want to work at the academy, we ask groups of students to interview candidates too.
- Prefects – Years 9, 10 and 11 students represent the academy at various events and ceremonies. They are led by our Senior Prefects including the Head Girl and Head Boy.
Our students have a unique perspective on how the academy runs and often have great ideas as to how to make things better. Our students work with academy staff to make improvements in the following ways:
Suggestion boxes – all students can write a suggestion and post it in the boxes in the Library and at Student Services. These are read out and discussed by the Council.
Council meetings – Senior Prefects and Family Captains meet each term to talk about the issues affecting them.
Committees – we have several groups of students who discuss particular topics we want to improve.
