Academy Awarded Prestigious Historical Association Mark
In February 2023, Co-op Academy Manchester was awarded the Silver Quality Mark by the Historical Association, which recognises the excellence of history provision in a school.
The Quality Mark assesses and values the history provision of the teacher, their department and the school and what is being offered to young people. There is a regulated programme for a school working to achieve the Quality mark to follow, with a clear assessment procedure delivered by independent Historical Association appointed assessors.
The assessor wrote to “thank the head of department for compiling the portfolio and also the staff and pupils for making his visit so enjoyable and rewarding.”
He observed a lot of great practice in both Key Stage 3 and GCSE lessons, and praised the leadership of the department. The curriculum offer was assessed to be “broad and ambitious, reaching beyond the requirements of [the National Curriculum] rubric and designed to build cultural capital” and he noted the achievement of students and the wider programme of enrichment on offer.
Ms McFadyen, Head of History, was delighted with the award.
She said “I am so proud of the work that we have done in the department to provide our students with a broad and rich curriculum that reflects the students we work with. It is an honour to be recognised by the Historical Association and for our hard work to be credited. It has inspired us to develop our curriculum even further!”
What the students say about History:
“I like that we learn history from all over the world, and that some people you may never have heard of could be so significant.”
Layla
“I like the effort teachers put into the lessons and how patient they are.”
Menoo
“Lots of support and resources available. Really nice teachers, help with anything. They post additional support on Google Classroom.”
