Year 7 - additional information following the recent reports that were sent to you
As an academy, we are keen to ensure that we can support all our students with their learning needs in the best way possible. As part of this process, all students sat an Access Reading Test (ART) this half term.
This online reading assessment allows us to see how well our students perform in four key areas (Literal comprehension, inference, analysis and vocabulary). It also gives staff a reading age for your child which, again, will help teachers to support them effectively in the classroom.
- Literal comprehension. Marked out of 20.
This means understanding a text, including facts, ideas, vocabulary, events, and stated information. It involves getting specific answers to questions or information gathering for questions that start with “what, where, when, who,” etc. For example: Who took Sam's pen? - Inference - Marked out of 16.
Inferential comprehension refers to the child's ability to understand meaning that is not explicitly stated or explained in the text they have read. - Analysis - Marked out of 9.
This means how well the child is able to break down the text into parts to better understand it. - Vocabulary - Marked out of 15.
This is how many words the child knows. - Reading Age -
Shown as a year and month figure (For example: 11.07 would mean a reading age of 11 years and 7 months)
Teachers will be using this data to ensure your child is receiving the right support to enable them to make progress in lessons. All staff use Reading for Meaning strategies in class which help students develop key reading skills as the first level of intervention. If your child has been identified as having a reading age significantly below their chronological age then we will be looking at different interventions to support them (both in and out of the classroom). This could include: form time reading interventions or small group work.
As parents / carers there are some simple steps you can take at home to help your child’s reading.
- Encourage your child to read - all our students have access to the library and to ebooks on the e-platform app.
-
Ask them questions about what they are reading in school. (Students in Year 7-10 have a form time reading book)
-
Get them to read to you - this could be from the book they are reading or when helping out with tasks around the house (for example: recipes, shopping lists or instructions)
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either myself or the Academic Head of Year.
Kind regards
Angela O’Connor,
Assistant Vice Principal (Reading and Personal Development)
